Sen. John McCain is about to give his victory speech from Dallas following today’s victories in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont, results which officially push him over the top in terms of delegates. Let’s be honest. These after-election speeches have never been his best moments. He is better in his stump speeches and in candid conversations. Will he do a better job tonight when Americans will be looking at him not as a candidate for the GOP nomination but as a candidate for president? We’ll see.

You’ve got to give him credit. McCain’s campaign was all but dead eight months ago. He still will have a hard time winning back the White House for the Republicans, especially given the state of the economy. But given his appeal to independents and moderate voters, he should not be ruled out – especially considering how undecided things are, and will be even after tonight, on the Democratic side.
