Rumors are flying that 3rd District Supervisor Tim Smith and 5th District Supervisor Mike Reilly may retire when their current terms end. Reilly is likely to make an announcement at the end of the week; Smith will announce whether he is running by mid-June.

But supervisor wannabees aren’t waiting for official announcements.

A poll being fielded tests the name recognition of several possible candidates for the Smith’s Santa Rosa-based seat. Among the names mentioned: Former Santa Rosa Councilwoman Sharon Wright, open space district spokeswoman Maureen Middlebrook, Assemblywoman Noreen Evans and Rohnert Park Councilman Tim Smith. Of added interest: This week, Supervisor Smith appointed Wright to the county Planning Commission following the resignation of longtime commissioner Nadin Sponamore.

Folks who are reportedly interested in Reilly’s west county seat include Sonoma County Planning Commissioner Rue Furch, Santa Rosa Councilman Lee Pierce and Democratic activist Maddy Hirschfield.

If any of these rumors pan out, 2008 could be a facinating year for political junkies.
