Prep sports is not the usual fare at The Insider, but we make an exception today to honor a student-athlete.

As the Cardinal Newman High School basketball team prepares to play for a state championship on Saturday, Michael Santos, an all-league performer, is blogging at pressdemocrat.com, and here’s part of what he wrote about the week leading up to the championship game:

“It might be a little hard to concentrate in class this week, but the fourth quarter is just starting so I’ll have to. I’m taking calculus, physics, English, campus ministry, newspaper and economics.”

So much for the stereotype of dumb jocks enrolled in cream-puff classes.

By the way, did you notice his schedule includes the trifecta of difficult classes – calculus, physics and journalism?

Please. There’s no laughing at The Insider.
