Ruben Navarrette Jr.

Among those who lost their jobs at the San Diego Union-Tribune in recent days was a familiar name – Ruben Navarrette Jr. whose column has regularly appeared on the editorial and opinion pages of The Press Democrat.

Navarrette, 43, an editorial writer and columnist, was among 36 journalists who were laid off at the Union-Tribune due to a “restructuring of the newsroom.” The newspaper began making the layoffs Thursday.

A spokesman for the newspaper said the “restructuring of the newsroom operations follows lengthy stakeholder feedback from readers, community and business leaders, and advertisers about understanding their wants, needs and media habits.”
According to Editor and Publisher magazine, Navarrette will continue to write his syndicated column for Washington Post Writers Group.

Navarrette  previously had been with the Dallas Morning News before joining the Union-Tribune in 2005.
